On the 19th of September, we gathered at our newly refurbished Swansea One Stop Shop to celebrate 35 years of impactful work during our Annual General Meeting. Joined by partners, commissioners, stakeholders, and community members, we reflected on our journey and achievements.
A Special Welcome
The day began with a welcome address from Hugh Irwin, Chair of Stori’s Board, who set the tone for the event. This was followed by a special video message from Jane Hutt MS, the Minister for Social Justice. In her address, she praised Stori’s vital work in supporting individuals across Wales who have experienced domestic abuse, through both our support services and our role as a specialist housing association. She highlighted the shared goals of Stori and the Welsh Government in eradicating domestic abuse and making Wales a safe place for all. Jane Hutt also drew attention to Stori’s Spectrum Project, a Welsh Government-funded initiative that has promoted healthy relationships among children and young people in schools across Wales for the past decade.
Celebrating the Past, Building for the Future
Andrew Belcher, Stori’s Chief Executive, then took the stage to reflect on Stori’s 35-year journey. He spoke of how the organisation has grown from humble beginnings in Carmarthen to become the diverse, pan-Wales organisation it is today. Andrew highlighted the challenges Stori has overcome, the key milestones it has achieved, and the significant impact our organisation has had on communities across Wales. In addition to reflecting on our history, Andrew looked to the future, reaffirming Stori’s commitments, and outlining priorities for the years ahead.
Amplifying Survivors Stories
The highlight of the day was hearing from those directly affected by Stori’s work. Amanda, a survivor of domestic abuse, shared her powerful story of resilience and recovery, providing a poignant reminder of the real-life experiences that underpin Stori’s efforts. Another anonymous testimony, “Sophie’s Voice,” shed light on the complex challenges faced by survivors. These personal stories highlighted the courage required to overcome such adversity and the critical importance of ongoing support. We are deeply grateful to those who shared their stories with such bravery.
A Glimpse into Our Work
Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in interactive breakout sessions, which explored the complex realities faced by support workers and survivors alike. “Ducks in a Row: A Day in the Life of a Support Worker” offered insight into the daily challenges faced by those working behind the scenes to provide unwavering support. “Why Doesn’t She Leave?” examined the emotional, psychological, and financial barriers that make it so difficult for survivors to leave abusive situations. And “Soup, Spider, & Stalking” gave a glimpse into how primary school pupils learn about healthy relationships. These sessions were very well received, and we would like to thank the Stori team members who facilitated them so expertly.
Our AGM
The afternoon saw the event transition into the Annual General Meeting (AGM). This important session allowed members to review the achievements of the past year, discuss the challenges ahead, and set goals for the future. The AGM provided an opportunity for Stori’s leadership to outline the organisation’s strategic direction, ensuring that future plans remain aligned with its mission and the needs of the communities we serve.
Stori’s Impact Day and AGM were more than just events – they were a powerful reminder of the strength found in community, the importance of amplifying survivors’ voices, and the ongoing efforts required to create lasting change. Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to continue building a safer, more supportive Wales for all.
